Dwarf Car Nationals Night Two

Dwarf Car Nationals Night Two

Diatte, Bender and Sanders Win on Night Two of Dwarf Car Nationals
By: Brent Cooper
(Marysville, Ca) 9-22-18…Kevin Bender not only won the Saturday night Dwarf Car Nationals main event at Marysville Raceway, but he also picked up another Veteran Division championship in the Western States Dwarf Car Association. Bender passed Brian Quilty on lap 15 and went on lead the final five laps to secure the win. Quilty, who had won the night before, finished second. Third spot went to Dan Geil. Tenth-place starting Tommy Brown came up to finish fourth. Maybe the most impressive drive was completed by Eric Weisler who went from 16th to fifth.
Winning for the second consecutive night was Ryan Diatte in the Pro Division. With the wins, Diatte also picked up the Western States Dwarf Car Association title for the Pro Division. The 30-lap main event was fiercely contested. Anthony Pope led the first 16-laps and then unfortunately, on a restart, spun and had to go to the rear of the field. This moved Joe Frock to the lead. Frock led the next 10-laps until he was passed by Diatte. The final four laps were epic. Danny Wagner took the lead on lap 27. Wagner led the final lap. Going into turn one, Diatte was in second and bumped Quilty from behind going into turn one. Wagner drifted up the track and Diatte drove under him for the lead. Diatte won the race. On the cool down lap Wagner let Diatte know that he wasn’t happy with the outcome. Wagner did finish second. Frock was third. Adam Teves and Gene Pires rounded out the top five.
Joe Sanders led all 15-laps to win the Sportsman Division feature event. He was followed to the line by Robert Johnson and Sam Borland.
The overall night of racing was spectacular. Each division raced a fast dash, numerous heat races and the Pro Division had a C and B main event. Each night, over 70 competitors packed the Marysville pit area. The Nor Cal Dwarf Car Association does a great job hosting the event. In the pits there is always some sort of barbeque and good times to be had. A raffle with great prizes takes place on Saturday afternoon. Thanks to Connie Bender for her insight both nights in the Marysville Raceway booth.
