Hawes Gets the Broom Out

Marysville, CA (April 21, 2018) …. Defending sprint car track champion Jeremy Hawes showed everyone on Saturday night why he is the driver to beat once again in 2018. Hawes turned the fastest lap in qualifying, 12.479, won the first heat race and then went on to lead all 25-laps to secure the feature event win. That my folks, is a clean sweep. While Hawes was never seriously challenged for the lead of the race, behind him Kenny Allen was doing his best to march back towards the front. Allen originally was set to start on the pole position but was penalized after the first start for going too soon. Allen was moved back a row and then set his sights on trying to get back to the top spot. He had good battled with Mike Monahan and William Fielding but by the time he got back to second, Hawes was long gone. In fact, Hawes won the race by nearly four-seconds. The best pass of the night occurred when Fielding passed Monahan in the last turn on the final lap to secure a third spot finish. Adam Walters survived a fire during hot laps, a mechanical issue in the heat race to bounce back and finish the main event in fifth.
The Crate Sprint main event was filled with lots of drama. Wade Lumsden led the first two laps until Jeff Macedo snuck by for the lead. Macedo looked to notch another win in his belt until lap five when he suddenly pulled off the track. This moved Jaylon Deas to the top spot. At one point, Deas had fallen back to fourth but was able to regroup and then get back to the top spot. From there on out it was all Deas. He extended his lead to nearly five seconds at the finish line. Give Mike Sayre credit, he stayed as close as he could and made good consistent laps. Sayre finished second. The only other driver on the lead lap was Kelly Hicks who crossed the line in third over nine-seconds behind. Cameron Haney won the lone heat race of the night. Unfortunately, his night ended early in the main when he rode up over a wheel and flipped his car on its side.
The Super Stocks were once again down on cars. That didn’t bother Chris Warner who picked up the win. He held off a charging Rod Oliver to get it done. James Castleberry hit the wall and came to a stop. His car could not continue. Richard Vanderploeg used a Hobby Stock to just keep his hopes alive in the championship battle.
Once again, the travelling Dwarf Cars saved the day. With 28 cars in the pit area this division has continued to excel and prosper. The main event was fantastic but a little lengthy because of numerous wrecks and spin outs. Danny Wagner held the lead, but Ryan Winter tried every which way to pass him. It was a pleasure to watch these two and their ability to race one another for so close and so long. Wagner would eventually win, and Winter finished second. Not enough could be said about Mike Grenert and what he did tonight. Grenert won the 12-lap B main event. He started 17th in the main event and raced his way up into a third-place finish. Thirteenth starting Zach Price survived most of the wrecks and found his way into a nice fourth place finish. Kevin Bender had an adventurous feature event. He started ninth and at one point was involved in a wreck that put his 16th on a restart. However, the smooth veteran worked his way back through the field and gathered himself a nice fifth place finish.
Dwarf car heat races were won by Winter, Kevin Miraglio, Dan Geil and Bender.
We are off this Saturday night from oval track racing, but the Malicious Monster Trucks will be performing Friday and Saturday night at the Marysville Raceway. Tickets are available at www.marysvilleraceway.com
