Mike Monahan Wins Second Main of Year at Marysville

Mike Monahan Wins Second Main of Year at Marysville

Marysville, CA (July 9, 2016)…Mike Monahan is having the time of his life. The Sparks, NV veteran picked up his second win of the season at Marysville Raceway. This win marks his 13th career triumph for the 2004 track champion. His previous win this season came back on June 11th.

Jeremy Hawes led the opening few laps during the 25-lap main event before 60-year old Mike Monahan took the lead. The race ran at a smooth pace until on lap 12 when third place car Cortney Dozier drifted too high in turn three and spun. This brought out the yellow. Under the yellow flag condition Jeremy Burt’s left rear tire goes flat. Burt soon exited the track to get the tire changed and thus gave up the fourth spot. On the restart Monahan is still the leader followed by Hall, Hawes and now Colby Wiesz. The ensuing lap was crazy. Wiesz was spun into the turn two wall. Going into turn three the second place car of Hall clipped the wall and crashes. Behind him Hawes flips upside down and collected in the wreck was Jeremy Phillips. Three of the top four cars are wrecked.

On the next restart Brandon Dozier was in the second spot until he spun in turn four. Dozier collected Burt, Justin Henry and Jimmy Steward. After the wreck Raquel Hall was now in the second spot. Korey Lovell sat third and Cody Lamar fourth. Lamar’s team should be commended because Lamar wrecked on the second lap of qualifying. The car literally had to be rebuilt. The team missed heat race number one but made it back in time for the feature.

The final 12 laps went on without a hiccup and Monahan cruised to the win. Lamar came home in the second spot. Wiesz battled back to finish third. Phillips and Lovell survived to earn top five finishes.

Kevin Bender thrilled the crowd with his flag to flag win during the 20-lap dwarf car main event. Bender is one of the best to ever strap into a dwarf car. Chasing him to the checkered flag was Matt Sargent. Sargent started in the seventh spot and should be given kudos for his charge up front. A total of 22 dwarf cars entertained the crowd.

On the track, Shannon Collins won the 10 lap three car hobby stock main event. Collins car was smoking the entire event but still had enough to beat the #27c of Jim Speck. However, post-race inspection determined that Collins car was illegal and the win was taken away. Speck was rewarded with the win. Anthony Doubledee was the third car and finished third.

Give the Super Stocks the credit they deserve. After previous caution plagued main events, the super stocks went the entire 20 lap distance non-stop. Courtney Dozier jumped out to the early lead and never looked back. Dozier dominated the race and was never seriously challenged. Phillip Shelby was close on his heels during the early part of the race. Shelby drove a strong race but was never able to challenge for the win. James Castleberry finished in the third spot. Steve Hammett came home fourth while Brandon Dozier was fifth.
