Wiesz Clean Sweeps Marysville

Marysville, CA (July 30, 2016) …Colfax driver Colby Wiesz brought out the broom on Saturday night and swept his competition underneath the rug. Wiesz out qualified 16 other competitors, won the first eight lap heat race, and completed his perfect night by winning the 25-lap winged 360 sprint car main event. The feature win was his 57th career triumph at Marysville Raceway. All of this took place during championship point race #13.

Mike Monahan jumped out to the early lead of the winged sprint car main event. Monahan, the winner of two prior main events at Marysville this season, looked primed to get win number three. Monahan led the first 15 laps and at times was turning the fastest laps of the race. Yet, on lap 16, Wiesz was able to dive under Monahan in turn one and took the lead. Wiesz rocketed by Monahan and then turned the fastest lap of the race on lap 17. Wiesz extended his lead to almost three seconds by the time the checkered flag waived. Monahan held on for second spot. Jeremy Burt did a solid job in finishing third. His championship rival, Cody Lamar, spun earlier in the event and could only manage an eleventh place finish. Unofficially, the two are now tied for the point championship lead heading into the next race on August 13th. Jeremy Hawes showed speed all night long and finished fourth. Billy Wallace brought the family owned #6w home in the fifth spot.

A few die-hard sprint car fans put up an extra $100 cash bounty if a driver could out qualify Lamar. Wiesz earned the cash bonus when he turned a 12.742 compared to Lamar’s 12.782.

Johnny Burns collected his second career win at Marysville Raceway when he won the 20-lap wingless spec sprint feature. Timmy Sherman Jr. led the first three laps. On the fourth time around Burns was the new leader. The fastest part of the track was to hug the pole all the way around. Burns car seemed to have the best grip and it showed. Give Sherman credit because he never let Burns too far out of his sight. At the finish Burns won the event over Sherman by 0.582. Josh Vieira finished in the third spot. Peter Paulson came home fourth. Nathan Johnson did a good job to come up through the pack and finish fifth. Sherman Jr. and Vieira won the eight lap heat races.

The Dwarf Car main event took longer than expected to get going, but once it did, the racing was spectacular as usual. The first three laps of the race featured numerous cautions that killed a lot of time. However, after lap three, the drivers began to feather out and the racing went non-stop. Up front it was Shawn Jones back to his old form. Jones ended up leading all 20 laps and dominated the rest of the field. At the finish he held over a six second advantage over second place finisher Kevin Bender. However, Bender needs to be commended because he originally started in the 12th position. Bender weaved his way up into the second spot by lap eight but was never able to reel in the leader. Another driver in the hunt for second was 11th place starting Jeremy Blackshire. As with Bender, Blackshire worked his way around issues to finish in third. Scott Dahlgren originally was penciled in to start 14th. Dahlgren sliced and diced his way to a fourth place finish. Danny Wagner was a factor all night and finished fifth. Jones won the first eight lap heat race of the night. Bender picked up the win in heat two. Matt Sargent won the third heat race. Another amazing showing of 21 Dwarf Cars attended the racing tonight.

Philip Shelby is making it a habit of winning at Marysville. It doesn’t seem to matter what division he is racing because at the end of the night we see a lot of him in victory lane. Tonight he won the Super Stock main event driving the familiar #73. Shelby beat Mike Walco by nearly a half second at the finish line. Three drivers had problems and could not finish. They included James Castleberry, Rick Dozier and Cortney Dozier. Steve Hammett came home in the third spot while Orville Owens finished in fourth. Even though he had issues in the main event, Castleberry won the lone eight lap heat race earlier in the night.

Championship point racing resumes on August 13th.
