Saturday Night Dwarf Car Nationals Attracts 82 Drivers
MARYSVILLE, Calif., September 20, 2025…Another successful 30th Dwarf Car Nationals featuring the Western States Dwarf Car Association was concluded last night. The Saturday night finale produced great racing and exciting battles. A total of 82 drivers returned for the second evening. Heat races, Fast Dashes, two B main and three feature events provided plenty of entertaining racing for the fans in attendance.
Before the races started, the track hosted a touching tribute to Kylee Johnson, a female racer who passed who passed way a few days prior. She was beloved by the Dwarf Car community. In her honor, all the cars lined up on the front stretch, and then completed a few memorial laps on the track. While the entire field was four wide, they left an opening on the front row for Kylee to ride along with all her friends.
Shawny Whitney showed why he is the most exciting Dwarf Car driver on the West Coast. Whitney thundered to the lead and was never seriously challenged. It was an exciting win for a team that shows their professionalism and desire to be great at every event. Whitney gained 10 positions to secure the win. Brendon Shrum had a spirited battle with brother Dylan Shrum. Both traded spots numerous times. In the end Brandon held off Dylan for a second-place finish. Camron Diatte also advanced 10 spots to finish fourth. Mike Grenert is always fast. This weekend was no different. Grenert came home in the fifth spot after 30 laps of racing. The hard charger of the race was Jace Badeker who passed 12 cars on his way to an eighth-place finish.
The Sportsman race was the most unpredictable race of the night. Just past the halfway point, the race took a dramatic turn. Going into turn one on lap 11, a slower car spun and collected the top four cars at the time. The leaders involved included Ben Mangini, Tommie Piantanida, Justin Smart, and Rick Rogers. This moved 5th place running Jason Lazzerini into the lead. Lazzerini and JT Russell swamped the lead on the final few laps. On the final lap, Lazzerini found the fastest line on the track and won the 20-lap race. Lazzerini advanced 12 spots during the race. Russell was second. Sunny Sunbird Jr. rounded out the podium. Dan O’Neil finished fourth. Eric Fromong crossed the line in fifth. Kate Robertson passed the most cars by advancing 14 spots to finish 10th.
Veteran standout Kevin Bender thrilled his Bender Nation fans who saw him win the 20-lap main event. Bender held off a hard charging Mike Reeder. Both Bender and Reeder showed great car control and respect for each other as they battled for the win. Both drivers have been big supporters of Dward Car racing, and both are Hall of Fame type competitors. Pete Piantanida drove a solid race to finish third. Dan Geil crossed the finish line in fourth. Tom Morely rounded out the top five. Mark Biscardi was credited with the hard charge of the race. Biscardi advanced 4 spots to finish 10th.
