Haulot, Ingle, and Cheney all Win on Opening Night
Jake Haulot Wins a Thriller at Marysville; Cheney and Ingle Score Wins Also
Marysville, CA 3/8/2025…Jake Haulot passed Billy Wallace on the last lap of the sprint car 360 main event, to steal the win, and thrill the large crowd at Marysville Raceway Saturday night. If the race was 24 laps, Wallace would have won his first race since 2023. However, the race is always scheduled for 25 laps, and that final quarter mile of a lap sealed the win for Haulot who drove around Wallace in turns one and two. Seth Standley took advantage of Wallace in turn three and passed him for the second spot at the finish. Wallace fell back to a third spot finish.
The overall main event was a fun race to witness. The only yellow flag was needed on lap 18 when Nick Larsen stopped in turn two. William Fielding was in contention all night and finished fourth. Justin Henry continued his solid start by driving Jim Richardson’s No. 8 to a fifth-place finish. Haulot turned the fastest lap in qualifying with a 12.147 second lap.
Caleb Ingle charged from his sixth starting spot into the lead on lap 17. Ingle went on to lead the final three laps to secure his second consecutive win at Marysville. On lap 17, race leader Koa Crane seemed to be slow going through turns three and four. Contact between himself and Ingle, brought Crane’s car to a stop in turn four. Crane restarted and finished seventh. The red flag was displayed on lap six when three cars tangled in turn four. Three cars were involved, including Jacob Johnson. The leaders of the race were just behind the wreck. Unfortunately, second spot Jason Ballantine couldn’t slow up enough and ended up tipping over in-between turn three and four. This sent him to the rear of the field. Ballantine rebounded to finish fifth. Britton Bock secured a solid third place finish. Matthew Kaiser was fourth.
The hard charger of the night was Derek Droivold. Starting in the 13th spot, Droivold avoided all the on-track issues, and charged his way to a second-place finish. After the race, a few of us misread the “places advanced” on the new my race pass app. It showed Jacob Johnson plus 6. It showed Derek Droivold plus 1. However, after reviewing it today, it was a plus 11 for Droivold. The app placed the one on top of each other, not side by side. After giving the $50 award money to Johnson, we will correct the mistake and give Derek Droivold a free pit pass at his next race.
As normal, the Hobby Stocks led the charge with 24 competitors signed into the pit area for their first point race of the season. It proved to be the most exciting race of the night with multiple leaders, lots of passing, and a late race change for the top spot. Jacob Bright set a torrid pace after he took the lead from Toby Merrifield on lap seven. Kyle Cheney soon emerged as the top challenger for the lead. The race changed on lap 16, when a yellow was needed for Summer Cheney. This closed the gap up front and set up a dramatic finish. Kyle Cheney shadowed Bright for the next three laps and then an opportunity arose for him to take the lead. On the final lap, Cheney made his way around Bright and won the race. Bright came home second. Devin Koranda finished third. Good run by Robert Arruda to finish in fourth. Nick Pate rounded out a solid top five. Merrifield stopped on lap 11 but did a great job to race back into a sixth-place finish. Summer Cheney gained eight spots and was awarded a $50 bonus. The Hobby Stock division is loaded with a bunch of top talented drivers. Looking forward to this year.
