Larsen Earns First Win at Marysville Raceway
Larsen Ends Search with Raceway Victory
(Marysville, CA 5/4/25) Nick Larsen ended a long search for victory at Marysville Raceway Saturday night as he outran former track champion Billy Wallace to capture the 20 lap 360-winged sprint car feature event. Jacob Johnson scored his second 20 lap Crate sprint victory of the year on the ¼ mile clay oval. And capping the evening, Shawn Whitney won the hotly contested Dwarf car 20 lap main event.
Larsen started second row, but a false start plus a bump and run in turn 2 knocked point leader Jake Haulot out to disrupt the start of the feature. Returning driver Steel Powell sat on the restart pole, but Larsen was up to the task and quickly darted out front. Wallace followed the example and raced into second. They ran one two until reaching traffic on the 9th lap when Larsen was momentarily slowed and Wallace closed to his rear bumper. A caution flag for John Sullivan who spun, reset the pace which Larsen clearly controlled. His pinpoint accuracy entering the turns was his strength all night. Powell ran third until lap 18 when Brad Bumgarner moved into the third spot. They all held those spots until the finish with Mark Hall rounding out the top 5. Larsen also moved up the point ladder to third and Wallace took the lead from Haulot after his early departure. Only 18 points separate the top 3.
Johnson crushed the Crate sprints standings with his victory, moving from 3rd to lead in one race. Like Haulot, point leader Mather Kaiser went out on the opening lap giving Johnson an opportunity. Starting on the pole he outgunned
K.C. Carpenter for the lead and second row starter Caleb Ingle raced into second. They would hold those spots the distance, but Ingle raced close behind the distance. Carl Droivold came from 6th to third, and Misty Castleberry came from tenth to finish 4th. The hard charger of the race was Koe Crane who started 14th and finished 5th. Johnson and Ingle ended in tie for the championship with Kaiser falling eleven points back in third.
Veteran Dwarf car drivers Mike Grenert and Mike Reeder sat in the front row of the Dwarf car starting field. They upheld their reputation with a dog fight as Grenert led. 6th starting Dylan Shrum and Shawn Whitney in the fourth row began to hunt down the Grenert Reeder twosome with bold moves against the turn 2 cushion. A minor caution flag on the 6th circuit brought the fight to a head. Shrum blasted into the lead with Whitney in tow. The see saw battle was brought to conclusion when Shrum got trapped outside a car he was lapping allowing Whitney to scamper by. The old boys followed with Grenert back to second and Reeder third. Shrum recovered for 4th. Brenden Shrum was 5th.
