Taxicab Challenge Ends in Tragedy

(Marysville, CA 10/18/25)…The annual Taxicab Challenge took place on Saturday, October 18, at the Marysville Raceway. A field of 54 drivers attended the “stock car” themed night of racing. Four different styles of cars were on hand to compete led by the local Hobby Stocks, Pure Stocks, Tri-State Pro Stocks, and Limited Late Models.

Olivehurst driver Phillip Shelby won 20-lap Hobby Stock feature. Shelby was flawless throughout the entire race. It was his second career Hobby Stock win at the Taxicab Challenge. Two-time track champion Kyle Cheney chased Shelby for most of the race but was never able to mount a serious charge to take the lead. Cheney finished second. Zach Lindgren drove up to a third-place finish. Johnny Hall and Jacob Bright rounded out the top five. A total of 17 cars attended the race.

Livermore’s Shawn DeForest won the Limited Late Model feature. DeForest won last year’s race too. Chris McGinnis did well and held onto the second-place finish. Tim Yeager was fast all night and finished third. A total of 11 cars competed tonight.

Wayne Trimble also repeated as a Taxicab winner. Trimble dominated the 20-lap pure stock main event. Trimble won last year’s race also. B.J. Clayton finished second. Michael Murphy drove from 13th to third.

The final race of the night featured the Tri State Pro Stock division. A total of 12 drivers took the green flag. Jacob Johnson was declared the winner of the Tri State Pro Stock feature event when Shawn McCoy was involved in a single car accident stopping the event on lap 14 of the scheduled 20 lap event. Phil Marino finished second. Mike Learn came home in the third spot.

Marysville Raceway is deeply saddened to report the passing of Shawn McCoy after he was transported to an area medical facility. Shawn was a veteran racer who had long been a Petaluma Speedway regular and former track champion. It was reported that the experienced racer had once raced in over 800 consecutive events. McCoy was well respected in the racing community. Our condolences, thoughts and prayers are with Shawn's family and friends as well as the racing community.
