Ensign and Ryland Score Opening Night Wins

(Marysville, CA 2-28-15)…Seventeen IMCA Sport Mods and eleven wingless sprints joined the winged sprint cars to race in memory of Sherm and Loree Toller on Saturday night at Marysville Raceway. Brentwood’s Fred Ryland drove a flawless race to capture the 20 lap Sport Mods main event. Sebastopol’s Geoff Ensign put on a non-wing driving clinic to secure the win during the 20-lap main event.

Grass Valley’s Brett Youngman started he 20-lap wingless main event at the front of the field. The original start was called back when Scott Hall ran up and over Misty Castleberry’s right rear wheel. The wheel exploded and Castleberry headed to the pit area. On the ensuing start Youngman led the first four laps until suffering through a nasty flip while going into turn one. The car was damaged but Youngman escaped unharmed. Hall inherited the lead; however, at this point Ensign was on the move. Ensign moved into the second spot on lap six and by lap eight he passed Hall for the lead. Ensign was untouched from there on out. Hall had a spirited battle with Josh Vieira for the remaining laps.

Defending Marysville champion Tim Sherman Jr. suffered through a long night. He was a roll over victim in his heat race and ran strong in the main event until he was sidelined again. Johnny Burns won the first heat race while Hall scored the win in heat two. The wingless sprints will be in action for two nights during this weekend’s Silver Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway

Fred Ryland started in the seventh spot but by lap four he was leading the IMCA sport mods 20-lap main event. Ryland went on to beat second place finisher Howard Law by over two full seconds. Law is coming off his mini stock championship at Silver Dollar Speedway from the year before. Fifth place starting Kyle Cheney quickly moved into the second spot on lap two. A few laps later Law was able to sneak about him for the second spot. While the opening night race was good it was marred by wrecks that slowed the event. At the end only seven cars crossed the finish line of the 17 that took the original green flag. Law and Jimmy Ford each won their respective heat races.

Ryland is as good as they come in the IMCA sport mods. Marysville is excited to host a bunch of IMCA sport mod events in 2015.
