Robinson, Winter and Shelby Back in Victory Lane

Robinson, Winter and Shelby Back in Victory Lane

Marysville, CA 5-16-20…Roseville’s Ryan Robinson won his third sprint car main event of the season, and his second in three starts at Marysville Raceway. Robinson picked off the February tribute to Sherm and Loree Toller and backed up that win with tonight’s triumph. Ryan Winter won an epic 20-lap Dwarf Car main event. Phillip Shelby went to the front, then spun, and raced his way from the back of the field to win the 20-lap Sport Mod feature.
With strict guidelines and rules in place the Marysville Raceway returned to some normalcy Saturday night. The Raceway adequately placed haulers at six feet apart to accommodate the 69-car field. In fact, some of the overflow parking was used to park late arriving teams. The race was broadcasted on Speed Shift Tv.
Blake Carrick took the early lead during the 25-lap winged 360 sprint car main event. On the next circuit, Carrick hit a hole that was developing in turn one and his car drifted up the track. This allowed Ryan Robinson to attack and take the lead. Yet, Carrick did not give up and passed Robinson back. This back and forth action continued for two more laps until Robinson secured the top spot and drove away. On lap six, the leaders started to battle slower cars. Robinson missed his line entering turn three and drifted up the track. Carrick dove to the inside and took back the lead. Unfortunately, Nick Larson caused a yellow and the race was slowed. This also gave the lead back to Robinson.
On the ensuing restart Jodie Robinson started to become a factor. She drove around Carrick on lap eight. This set up a brother / sister showdown. On lap 11, Blake spun and dropped back to the rear of the field. Jodie was impressive tonight. The track was hooked up, tacky and rough. Two drivers on the move were Sean Becker and fast time qualifier Tanner Carrick. On lap 15 Becker moved around Jodie for second. Tanner was also able to pass Robinson for third. Becker was able to close in on Robinson, but never able to really challenge for the lead. A late caution took the leaders out of lapped traffic. This gave Robinson a clear track ahead of him with two laps to go. He never faltered and won his third show of 2020. Becker finished second followed by Tanner, Jodie, and JJ Hickle.
Jake Haulot won the 12-lap B main. Transferring with Haulot to the feature included Caden Sarale, Nick Larsen and Anthony Pope. Heat races were won by Ryan Robinson, Jesse Love, Jodie Robinson, and Blake Carrick. Tanner Carrick earned the quick time award at a 12.562.
The Dwarf Car main event was spectacular. It was a pleasure to watch the two Titans of the Sport, Ryan Winter and Shawn Jones battle lap after lap for the win. Neither wanting the other to win. The two put on a driving clinic. These two swapped the lead numerous times, battled through dense slower traffic and in the end produced one of the best races we have seen. While those two battled, the race was slowed by nine yellow flags, but to their credit, it never took away from their race for the lead. The final caution was needed on lap 18. This set up a two-lap dash. Winter led the field back to the restart and held on win by the narrowest of margins, 0.083. While the focus was on the leaders, the third on back battle was just as great. In the end Mike Grenert charged to a third-place finish. Buddy Olschowka and Ben Wiesz were spectacular as they both raced hard for the entirety of the event. Shawn Whitney cruised to the win in heat one. Grenert and Winter won the next two eight-lap heat races.
Phillip Shelby got the spin and win during the 20-lap Sport Mod feature. On lap six, Shelby spun in turn one while leading. He regrouped, started from the rear and with three laps to passed Timothy Allerdings for the lead. The race was marred by two opening lap mishaps. On the original start, Richard Vander Ploeg spun in turn four and collected Todd Cooper, Andrew Peckham, and Jimmy Ford. The next start produced a four-car pile again and included Mike Merritt, Hunter Merritt, David Larabee and Mike Adams. Following Shelby and Allerdings at the line was Jason Ferguson and Scott Savell. Shawn Smith rounded out the top five. Cooper and Shelby each won their eight-lap heat race.
